Given the seismic conditions in which the Japanese live, it is not surprising that they come up with various ways to protect themselves in this regard. This is especially true of construction, as most deaths occur under the ruins of buildings. To avoid the tragic consequences of natural disasters, Japanese inventors came up with… flying and dancing houses that can withstand earthquakes of any intensity. They presented quite real projects and even put them into practice.
Why flying houses “can take off” at the right time and are not afraid of earthquakes
Japan, as always, surprises with its innovative developments in the automotive, electronics and electrical industries. Construction has not been left out, especially given the unstable surface of the country. Until then, in seismic areas, builders have tried to strengthen the foundations of houses with super-long piles, create reinforcement belts and use only those materials that can withstand high-intensity earthquakes. This time, Japanese engineers and architects took a completely different path and created a unique design of buildings that can “float” above the ground, avoiding destruction during earthquakes.
Interesting fact: The word “flying” in the description of conceptual projects is a hyperbole, used by project developers to evoke an association with childhood dreams. Of course, to some extent, the specialists of the Japanese design company Air Danshin Systems managed to bring the fantasy closer to reality, but not as clearly as shown in the design images presented in the concept. They managed to introduce special air cushions that lift the entire building off the ground, but visually this is not as impressive as many would like to see.
If you look at the “flying” houses built, of which there are already over a thousand, you will not see anything special. These are standard residential buildings, which do not differ from the rest of the buildings, but in case of an earthquake, they will not only save the lives of all members of the house. Experiments and practice have shown that residents will not even feel the shocks or movements of the house.
To achieve such stability of the structures, Air Danshin Systems specialists came up with the idea of building houses without a rigid connection to the foundation. The structure of the building is installed on a frame, inside which there is a special airbag with built-in seismic sensors that analyze the vibrations of the earth’s surface and a powerful pressure compressor.
At the slightest movement of the earth’s crust, the security system is triggered and in a few seconds the pillow is filled with air, raising the structure of the house above the ground. Despite the fact that the height of the air gap is about 4 cm, this was enough to keep the building intact and safe, while the things inside the house remain in place.
The house will be in the levitation stage until the threat passes and the seismic sensors “throw” the exhaust valves, which will slightly lower the building into position.
However, the most important thing for ordinary Japanese is that such a house that can “take off” at the right time is cheaper than strengthening the entire structure with earthquake-resistant materials and structures.
It is worth noting: the developers of Air Danshin Systems Inc., before launching the pilot project, conducted several tests and studies. Under the conditions of the factory, the company’s specialists created not only the house itself, but also special connected equipment that produces seismic waves, similar to an earthquake. During the experiment, the house that “took off” and all the things in it remained motionless (not even the wine in the glass moved!).
Not only homeowners, but also many economic agents have been interested in this idea, although it is unlikely that such constructions have been widely developed. For tall buildings, it is even more appropriate to use the technology of “dancing houses”.
The ability of “dancing” houses to withstand earthquakes
Japan is a country where scientific institutes and experimental enterprises are involved in the problems of seismic resistance of buildings, where absolutely all inventions, without exception, are tested.
Dancing houses are classic buildings, in which ultra-strong frame structures and a network of cables are introduced, which are reliably fixed to the foundation. From a technological point of view, such additions to the structure of a building can be made both during construction and for the consolidation of existing buildings.
Thus, the house does not stand still during the movements of the earth’s crust, trying to maintain its balance, but, on the contrary, moves in time.
